“I can’t
believe you came” Lola shouted over the volume of the music “thought you wanted
to sleep in this weekend”
“I can’t
believe it too” Naya said “I just needed to get out of the house”
“Right. So
you wanna dance? Got my eye on some guys in the VIP section” Lola winked at her
“no thanks”
Naya shook her head smiling. “Just gonna grab a drink and feed my eyes”
“suit
yourself” Lola said swaying to the music as she moved away from her towards the
dance floor.
Naya went to
the bar and ordered a chilled bottle of Smirnoff Ice, she nodded her head to
the loud music.
It wasn’t the kind of music she listened to on a normal day but
there in the club, she loved it. She took her drink and went to stand in a
corner. She loved to dance and apart from that, she loved to watch people
dance.
Twenty
minutes later, she had almost finished her second bottle when a strikingly
beautiful lady walked up to her.
“hey” she
said
“hey” Naya
said still nodding to the beat trying not to stare. She had a piece of hair out
of place that made Naya fight the temptation to put it back.
“you kinda
look funny doing that” she said to Naya
“doing
what?”
“nodding
your head like that”
Naya laughed
“I know right?”, the lady laughed too
“I’m Chichi”
she said
“My name's Naya”
“So why
aren’t you on the dance floor? You look like you love to dance”
“I do! But I
don’t like dancing alone. My friend over there is having the time of her life.”
She nodded towards Lola who was dancing with a guy in the most suggestive way
she had ever seen
“plus, no one’s asking” Naya shrugged
“no one’s
asking me either” chichi said with a grin “Wanna dance? Let’s make ‘em jealous”
she winked at Naya.
Naya laughed
with excitement “Oh yes! Lets!”
They got on
the dance floor and before she knew it, time had gone by. She next time Naya looked
at the time it was almost three am in the morning. They had been dancing
nonstop for almost an hour and half
“Wow. You
have a lot of stamina” chichi shouted in her ear over the loud music “but I’m
beat”
“sorry” Naya
mouthed to her
“wanna chill
for a bit? My car is out back, so we can get off our feet for some time, there
seem to be no space in here”
Naya nodded
and followed Chichi out of the club.
They exited
laughing.
“Oh my God,
we must have had over 30 guys just staring at us with open mouths as we were on
the floor”
Naya laughed
“that was so much fun, can't remember the last time I had that much fun”
They got to
chichi’s car and settled in with the doors closed to keep out the night chill.
Talk and
laughter flowed between them for a long time until something shocking changed
the course of the night Naya was having. Chichi placed her lips on hers.

State hospital, the next day.
The emergency room was in an uproar as the patient was
wheeled in, you could only tell she was female by the clothes she wore. Her face
and body were battered and bruised.
She was barely breathing. It was assumed
that she had been in a car crash. She was wheeled straight into surgery
55 minutes later, the operating doctor called the Time of
Death. The doctors and nurses emerged from the operating theatre. They had
tried their best but to no avail.

“so….” Lola
said to Naya as she typed a report on her computer the next Monday
“so what?” Naya
said not looking up
“so I saw
you last week Friday”
“uh huh”
Naya continued typing, not paying much attention to what Lola was saying.
Her
boss wanted that report 30 minutes ago, she was way behind on it and he was
close to having her head for it.
“soo…..”
Lola said again.
she waved her hand in front on the
computer screen when Naya didn’t respond
“Lola!” Naya
batted her hand away “Mr Doga will have my head if I don’t finish this in the
next 10 mins”
“you’re such
a workaholic” Lola said unfazed “I saw you dancing with that chic on at the
club on Friday”
“so what?”
Naya sat back in her seat and folded her arms “I can’t dance with a lady? I
dance with you don’t I?”
“oh yes you
do hon but that dance was different. Thought you were going L on me”
“L? I’m
sorry, you lost me there”
“lesbian
nau” Lola whispered “you have to code those kind of words now, you know, this government is crazay, I don’t wanna spend 14 years in prison for just saying the
L word”
Naya laughed
“Indeed… We
were just having fun Lola, it’s allowed. Can I get back to work now, I really
need to finish this”
“Whatever
you say”
Lola winked
at her and left.
Naya turned
back to face her computer but she couldn’t type anything.
For close to five
minutes, she stared at her computer but nothing came to her.
All she could
think about was the Friday night at the club. She smiled a little as she
remembered how much fun she’d had with Chichi.
She couldn’t remember exactly how
they’d parted ways. She picked up her phone and checked to see if they had
exchanged phone numbers but no name came up as Chichi or club. The last thing
she could remember was talking with Chichi in her car, she definitely wasn’t
going to tell Lola that, she would never hear the end of it.
She’d slept a lot
too after that night. She’d woken up late that Saturday afternoon. She guessed
she must have been more drunk than she’d thought or perhaps even more exhausted than she'd felt.

“hey you,
I’ve never seen you in here before” a voice said to Naya fifteen minutes after she entered the club as she sat in a corner and sipped her drink, the next Friday
She ignored
it. She wanted to be left alone tonight
Right there was one of the reasons why she hated coming out with Lola, who only mostly went to clubs. Every time she said she wouldn't, she found herself coming because she loved the way she felt in a club. She felt less different because she was surrounded by people with whom she shared the same passion for dance.
“hello” the voice said again
She took
another sip and pretended to be deaf
“ignoring
me?” It said with a hint of laughter
A small
smile came to her lips but she didn’t say anything. At least he got that hint, she thought
“helloooooo”
it said again
But
apparently he didn’t take it, she sighed and turned to him
“go away” she said
“why?”
“because I
want to be left alone”
“okay, I’ll
just sit quietly then” he said and rested his back on his seat
Naya stared
at him for a second or two.
He looked young, almost too young to be in the
club. He had a face that you would remember, his features were defined and they
suited him well.
If it were another time, maybe she would have welcomed his
advances but she simply turned away and continued surveying the crowd in the
club.
It was especially full that night. She caught a glimpse of Lola from afar,
she had her hands up in the air laughing and moving to the beat. She was dancing
with a guy who looked like he was about to fall on his face any second. He looked so
drunk, he probably wouldn’t notice if he did anyway.
Her gaze drifted away and
focused on a couple making out in the corner. She tore her eyes away, they
reminded her too much of the times she and Itan had done things like that.
“so…” the
voice beside her said
“Thought you were going to sit quietly” she said without
looking at him
“I was” he said “but looking at you just makes it so hard”
“right” she said and took a sip, he was just ridiculous.
“say again?” he said over the music
“I said okay” she responded
“soooo…would you like to dance?”
“no”
“why not?”
“I’m not in the mood”
“why are you in a club then?”
“to have a nice peaceful drink which you are making next to
impossible right now”
She said under her breath and looked at the time. It was almost 1 am. She could
still get a cab if she waited long enough.
She got up from her seat and left
the club.
Naya looked at the time again, she had now been waiting for a
cab for almost 20 minutes. She didn’t want to go back into the club.
She picked
up her phone to call Lola, Lola always had a cab guy on call, hopefully he
would be there tonight, maybe he could drop her home then come back for Lola. She prayed Lola would at least feel her phone vibrating because short of a
bomb blast, she probably wouldn’t hear anything over the loud music.
The phone rang and rang. No answer. She was about to dial
again when a sleek Mercedes benz parked in front of her.
Young, face-to-remember guy came out of the driver’s side
“did you leave because of me ?” he was saying with a grin
Naya gritted her teeth as he walked up to her, the guy could
be persistent. One would think he would just leave her be.
“let me drop you off, I know you left because of me and I’m
just trying to do the right thing here”
“look” she began but stopped when two other men appeared
beside them. She took a step back but a hand closed over her mouth and soon she
was inside the car speeding off to God knows where.
