BLIND DATE

BOY: hello
GIRL: [smiles] hello
BOY: Brenda?
GIRL: [pauses as she takes a seat] “you sound surprised or should I say disappointed?”
Boy: “oh no, I’m just asking to be sure”
GIRL: [narrows eyes] “were you expecting someone different?”
BOY: “different? In what way?
GIRL: [shrugs] “I don’t know, you tell me”
BOY: [smiles] “I wasn’t expecting someone as pretty. I’ve heard some terrible stories
           about blind dates”

HAUNTING?

Have you ever had the feeling that you were being watched and you turn around and there’s nobody there?

Have you ever been home alone and you spot something from the corner of your eye and you turn to look and there’ nothing there?

All my life, this had always happened to me, I learnt to live with it but now? It’s gotten worse.

Sometimes I feel a presence behind me, the hairs on my neck rise up and when I turn to look, I see nothing, I see no one.

NAYA (3)

***

The police officers looked at each other, the scene was incomprehensible.

The bodies looked like they had been attacked by some kind of wild animal and then shoved into the car. There was blood everywhere, all over the windows, the windscreen, the seats, the doors, even on the floor outside the car. There seemed to be limbs missing in one or two of them. They couldn’t really be sure from where they were standing.

The crowd of onlookers was growing fast, one of the officers picked up his phone, made a call and spoke rapidly into it. What was taking them so long to get there? He had called for a back up team with an ambulance to carry the bodies over 20 minutes ago. He turned his back to the sleek looking car to face a growing crowd of people who had whipped out phones to take pictures.

“I can’t believe you came” Lola shouted over the volume of the music “thought you wanted to sleep in this weekend”

“I can’t believe it too” Naya said “I just needed to get out of the house”

“Right. So you wanna dance? Got my eye on some guys in the VIP section” Lola winked at her

“no thanks” Naya shook her head smiling. “Just gonna grab a drink and feed my eyes”

“suit yourself” Lola said swaying to the music as she moved away from her towards the dance floor.

MIMI

My name is Miracle, my mummy calls me Mimi.

She named me Miracle because it took a long time for my mummy to have me. I am 14 months old now.

My mummy works a lot and she cannot take me to work because it is not allowed in her office.

I don’t know where my daddy is and baby daycare is too expensive for my mummy’s

CHOICES (2)

Kike welcomed the pain she was feeling.

It meant she would meet her darling son soon. Very soon.
She shifted uncomfortably on the living room couch. She didn’t want to go to the hospital now.

She had already had two episodes of false labour and she had been sent back home, both times, after rushing to the hospital in anticipation.

Her doctor had said her age was weighing in on her and the baby and that she should

NAYA

Naya woke up on her bathroom floor. She was naked and curled up under the running shower

She sighed as she sat up, frustrated. She didn’t understand what was going on with her. It was the second time that month that it had happened. She struggled to her feet and winced. Her muscles were sore and her feet ached.

She grabbed her towel and went into her bedroom.

She paused at the door.

There were clothes scattered everywhere.

CHOICES

“its a boy” the doctor said

“are u sure?” Kike asked excitedly, she was beginning to feel out of breath from being on her back for so long on the ultrasound bed but she didn’t mind. She had waited so long for this moment

“yes I’m sure. Its a boy”

Oh thank God, Kike whispered silently
She got off the table and proceeded to go and wait for her scan print out

Dayo looked as his wife’s pregnant belly, it seemed to be protruding more and more these days.

DIARY OF … (3)

I made friends with a girl at that club where I work.

She’s an okay girl, she acts tough but she’s really not. How do I know? I helped out with an issue she was having and now she’s crying her eyes out over it.

She called me 20 minutes ago when she found out what had happened and she had been on the phone with me till just about a minute ago.

Gosh! I felt like slapping her through the phone and shouting “receive sense!” as popularly said on one of my favourite blogs to visit.

She was thoroughly dejected. I don’t know why she’s taking it so hard anyway. She actually wished for it. well not exactly word for word but I knew deep down she wanted something more.

IS IT WORTH IT? (2)

I thought had finally reached the edge of my sanity but this brought it to a whole new level. I stopped struggling, horror froze my being, I was to find out later that somehow while all these was happening, I had lost control of my bladder.

The hand stretched out tearing Ifagbemi’s mouth from ear to ear. Tiny hairs that moved like snakes protruded from it or snakes that looked like hair, I don’t know.

As I watched in horror trying to wrap my head around the horror that was unfolding around me, another hand rose out of his mouth. By then, it was obvious something was about to climb out of him. Something horrific, something deadly. Suddenly I found my voice

“I will choose” I screamed on top of my lungs

Deep rumbling shook building. It sounded like laughter that could only emanate from the deep belly of the devil himself

IS IT WORTH IT?

My name is Bisa and I am not a spiritual person. Well, that was what I thought.

My life ended when I decided to follow a friend of mine, Khiro, to see a spiritualist.

His name is Ifagbemi.

Khiro loved the finer things of life but he was too lazy to work for them. He decided to get money the easiest way he could think of.

“bobo, abeg you fit follow me go see one baba like that. I get one runz for him house.”

He said to me that fateful day as soon as he showed up at my place not telling me the actual reason why he wanted to go there.

He smelled like feaces.

I later found out that he had jumped into a dumpster to avoid being lynched by a mob after he had snatched an old woman’s purse in the market close to my place some minutes earlier.

THE OTHER SIDE (2)

“where’s your wife?” Ife found herself asking

“she has become a thorn in my flesh" Biodun shook his head "She isn’t what I thought she was”

“hmm…I guess some people change, don't they?" she cocked her head to the side regarding him lazily "the number of years doesn’t really matter”

“I know you're referring to me and I deserve it. I deserve worse. I just hope you can forgive what I did to you. I will surely understand if you don't”

“I have. Did that a long time ago" Ife said to him, her expression unreadable

"Actually, I forgave you that day in court when you told everyone that I was a bad wife and mother. A disgrace to womanhood…and my personal favourite..." she paused for effect

THE OTHER SIDE

“After trying to pacify you on several occasions to no avail. You, henceforth, have ceased to become husband and wife. I put an end to the Union between both of you from today in the interest of peace”

Those words echoed in Biodun’s mind as memories of how he had let a perfectly good woman go.

22 years of his life, down the drain because of what he had thought was a better, exhilarating option in Annette.

“what are you still doing here old man” Annette strolled in from being out with “pals”, she called them.

It was almost 11pm.

She had been out all day and through most of the night.

DIARY OF... (2)

I saw him again today. He looked even better than he did the last time.

His five o’clock shadow was divine. It must be a new look that he’s going for, it looked heavenly.

He walked into the bar where I was working just before five. I was his attendant for the evening and I loved every minute of it.

Well up to the point where I decided to spill his drink on him. LOL!. I had to make it memorable for him as well

It wasn’t easy getting the job at the bar.

I had to offer that greedy SOB of a manager two hundred thousand naira to let me work there for a month. I had to tell him that it was for research purposes into the life of the young hard working Nigerian of course, I couldn't tell him that I had stalked Tall, Dark and Handsome for close to two weeks to learn his routine and find out his favourite spots in the city, could I?

BROKEN 2

4 months later

“Tunde I think I’m pregnant” Bisi said to her husband one morning as she watched him dress up for work

He chuckled “well you know what to do with that” he said without glancing in her direction.

“but...”she hesitated “don’t you think it’s time to finally have a child of our own? I mean it would be nice to have children running around the house for a change.  It would keep me from feeling lonely and-“

that's the reason why I bought you those books. To keep you from being idle. if you read them more often, you wouldn't feel lonely”

“it isn’t the same you know. Having a little girl or maybe a little boy who-“

“enough!” he cut her off with a glare “I’ve told you several times that I will share you with no one. Do you understand me? No one. Not even my own child.”
he turned back to adjusting his tie “I will send Jide back home with the money. He will take you to the hospital. You know the rest”

BROKEN

Bisi lived in fear.

Fear of time. Fear of life. Fear of death. It was her constant companion. She couldn’t remember the last time she was truly happy.

6 years of walking on egg shells in her home had robbed her of her self worth and sense of accomplishment.

Tunde’s anger was something that should not be stirred or toyed with when stirred. If the bruise on the side of her face was anything to go by, it showed that.

She winced as she tended to her bruises with foundation and concealer, she needed to go get some food items and she needed to look at least presentable.

Mama Sikira knew what she went through on a regular basis, that was why she had put off going to her shop for a few days. The woman couldn’t stand seeing her like that and always complained whenever she did. It made Bisi feel ashamed of herself. She didn’t know why, she just did.

Now that Tunde had instructed her to make him pounded yam with bitter leaf soup for dinner and there was no egusi to use to make the stew, she needed to go to Mama Sikira’s shop. The woman wasn’t the only one in the area who had a food items shop. There were over 4 shops in the area but Bisi just preferred her because she was a very nice woman and her goods were so cheap that sometimes she couldn’t believe the peanuts Tunde always left for food stuff could get such quantity of items from her.
Bisi usually wondered if the woman didn’t intentionally sell things to her at a give away price.

“hurry up , Bisi, better to go early than late” she said to herself as she added more concealer to her face.

DIARY OF...

Today I saw the man of my dreams.

He was the definition of tall dark and handsome. He had very thick hair which didn’t look like it would go bald when we grow old together (I really hate bald men).

As he walked by me, his cologne was so intoxicating that I had to stop myself from physically grabbing him and burying my face in his chest. I can still remember the smell of it as I write this. It was rustic and masculine. I could immediately picture what he would look like in swimming trunks ... and less, oh yes. His strong abs, taut body, the whole works. It was truly incredible to imagine.

He had a good fashion sense too. He had dressed for the day. I love me a man with a good fashion sense. His knee length shorts had showed off his exquisite calf muscles. By the look of it, he must be a regular jogger. His feet were perfect too. Oh lord his toes were clean and his nails were well manicured. i could eat off his feet if he asked me to

BB likes to sing. But only to herself.

Sometimes she does a private performance and imagines herself going places.

One day BB overdoes performance and He hears

He comes into BB's room and says "was that you that i just heard singing?"

BB smiles and says a tiny "yes"

He stares at her

BB looks away, she cant look into his eyes, she's too shy, he has this expression on his face and she wonders what He must be thinking.

He sits down and says "sing again, i want to listen"
